Phew, long climb today but we decided to stop short as we found accommodations about 2 km from the top in La Laguna.
The capitol of the Galicia region is where we are headed, Santiago de Compostella. This region has about 3 million residents, and not much in the way of a successful industrial base.
The most influential traces left behind from the ancient days, are the roots of the Celts, who settled here from 700 BC till the fall of the Romans in about135 BC.
Not until the discovery of the apostles tomb in the 9th century did Galicia become internationally known, and today it is one of the most desired locations to walk-in in Spain
Galicia , predominantly making its living from agriculture and fishing, is still one of the poorest regions in Spain, yet it still retains its close connection to its Celtic heritage, whether through music ( the bagpipes are the traditional musical instrument), or their laid back attitude. They have a strong belief in the supernatural power of stones and the sea, and many still believe in witches here.

| After an hour on the road, we looked back at beautiful Villafranca del Bierzo in the valley |
 |
| Trabadello village, has not benefitted from the increase in pilgrim traffic |
We are leaving the province of Leon today when we hit the top of the climb, and walking into Galicia, if you like Octopus ( pulp) this is where you want to be, it’s their traditional meal.

 |
| It doesn’t look it but it’s very steep and wet |
La Laguna is a few km up from La Faba, but a welcome sight as the last 3 miles of this climb were a real challenge. Anyway, we are here and 8 of us in a room, it’s better than being stuck outside, or having to walk back down to find a bed. Kaz tried to rent a horse to carry her up here, they have some, but they left earlier from HerrerĂa than we could get there.
